1995 was amidst the height of the '90s children's movie boom. From Jumanji, Toy Story and Pochahantas to movies adults could enjoy like Braveheartthe cinema was a solid place to waste an evening, there just were no sports flicks of note. It was a step forward for video games when Sony's orginial Playstation was released on U.S. shores. The History Channel launched while Full House ended. Also, in case you read the tagline and wondered aloud "what the hell are they talking about? I'm not old," it was the year that gold medaling gymnasts Jordyn Wieber, McKayla Maroney and Gabby Douglas were born.

Coolio lived up to his name when he dropped "Gangsta's Paradisewhich topped the year end charts over '94 holdovers "Waterfallsand "Creep" and one hit wonder Skee-lo was briefly relevant with a catchy tune where he wished he was taller so he could play basketball and pul tail.

Like every other year it had its share of deaths from pop culture icon Eazy-E to baseball icon Mickey Mantle to the reason you don't have fucking polio, Jonas Salk. It also saw the largest terror attack in U.S. history (up to that point) when on April 19 Timothy McVeigh blew up a massive homemade bomb outside that Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City which killed 168 people and injured almost 700 others because he was mad about Waco.

Not an easy transition but sports are about distraction (and presumably the reason why you're here). And it was definitely a year full of going-ons in the world of athletics which is why we give you a look at  Retro Year in Sports: 1995.
