It's no secret that besides the speed, the sound of Formula One racecar engines is one of the main attractors for the sport. The mind-numbing drone makes hearts race and energizes the crowd. But that may all change in 2014.
According to Wired, all teams will have to swap out their 2.4-liter V8 engines for turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engines that max out around 15,000 RPM as opposed to the current 18,000 RPM. The lower RPM combined with the build of the V6 (one exhaust with a turbocharger) is what causes the diminished sound.
The Mercedes AMG Petronas YouTube Channel posted the video below with the caption: "This is a lap of the mythical Monza circuit with the new-for-2014 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 Formula One Power Unit. It's a new music - but a beautiful one, too. Enjoy :)." One commenter took shots by writing "My hairdryer has more grunt than that thing." Mercedes hilariously shut them down by saying, "Be careful when you blow dry - your head may be knocked off if that's true and not just a bit of hyperbole ;)."
