Every day that this federal government shutdown drags on, there are new lightbulb moments when we realize just how important it is for the government to receive funding so that people in various occupations can return to work. The New York Timespointed out that no federal government operations means no National Highway Transportation Safety Administration tests are being performed and cars can't be recalled for deadly defects. All those crash-test dummies are lying around doing nothing instead of helping to save lives.

While there is no way to know if accidents that happen during the shutdown are directly related to days missed, but it certainly doesn't help. It has been 3 days and over 800,000 employees are not at their jobs.
