How in the world did Warren Sapp end up in the middle of the whole Jonathan Martin/Richie Incognito fiasco? We're not sure. But yesterday, Sapp did an interview with Dan Patrick and revealed how Incognito once called him the N-word during a game. And now, Sapp is in the news again in relation to the Martin/Incognito story. That's because his former Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate Keyshawn Johnson just did a radio interview and revealed that Sapp used to bully one of their Bucs teammates Chidi Ahanotu back in 2000.
"Chini Ahanotu played with me in Tampa Bay, and I used to watch Warren Sapp do some similar things to Chidi Ahanotu," Johnson said. "Now I'm saying this on the record, and it's going to go all over the country after I say this. I used to watch him try to bully Chidi Ahanotu, OK? Because he felt he was more superior than Chidi."
According to Johnson, though, the bullying didn't last very long. Because after awhile, Ahanotu decided he had had enough.
"One day, you know what Ahanotu did?" Johnson asked. "He got up and he told him, 'Get your you-know-what in the middle of the floor right now. I'm tired of it.' At that point, guess what Sapp did? He sat down…[Sapp] didn't want no part of it. Until you stand up for yourself and don't allow these chumps to do that sort of stuff to you, they'll keep doing it. That's the way bullies are."
Both Ahanotu and Sapp have confirmed Johnson's story, with Sapp adding that he bullied Ahanotu to toughen him up and to get him ready to play alongside of him. But does this excuse Incognito for doing what he reportedly did to Martin? Does it mean that Martin should have done what Ahanotu did and stepped to Incognito? At this point, it really just depends on who you ask. This very well may go down as the most polarizing sports story of 2013…and it's not even over yet.
