Late last week, just before his fight against Brandon Rios, Manny Pacquiao spent almost $23,000 buying relief supplies to donate to those who are still suffering as a result of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Nice gesture, right? The only problem: Pacquiao actually had to borrow the $23,000 in order to make his donation, because he doesn't have a single dollar to spend right now.

So how is that possible, especially when you consider that he literally just had a fight? Well, according to Pacquiao, he's broke as a joke at the moment because the Bureau of Internal Revenue in the Philippines has frozen all of his bank accounts. They say that Pacquiao owes about $50 million in back taxes, and they're not going to unfreeze his accounts until he pays up. But Pacquiao says that he already paid taxes in the United States on the money he owes, so he's not going to pay the Bureau.

"I appeal to them to remove the garnishment so that I can move and pay for my staff's salaries," he said yesterday. "I am not a criminal or a thief…The money that was garnished by [the Bureau of Internal Revenue] is not stolen. This came from all of the punches, beatings, blood, and sweat that I endured in the ring."

Not so fast, though. The Bureau says that they will release Pacquiao's funds if he gets documentation from the Internal Revenue Service in the U.S. proving that he paid his taxes in America. But until they get that, Pacquiao will not have access to any of his money.

Either Pacquiao is in deep, deep, deep trouble when it comes to money—or there is some kind of miscommunication taking place here. Either way, Pacquiao doesn't have a dollar to his name at the moment. And if it's because he didn't manage his money properly in recent years, that's a real shame.
