Many European cities are really, really congested with brutal traffic. Most of them were laid out centuries before the car was invented, and when their respective countries' populations were smaller than the populations of most cities today. The infrastructure to deal with millions of car owners just isn't there.
In response, some European cities, like Brussels, Belgium, under the leadership of Socialist Party mayor Yvan Mayeur, are considering banning cars in their downtown areas. While normally we're really pro car, we think this might actually make a lot of sense. Driving in areas like this is miserable, and doesn't represent anything we like about driving, so missing out on that experience wouldn't be too bad. At the same time, walking and biking around those downtown areas would be much nicer without 3,000 lb death machines literally waiting at every corner.
Perhaps a car free downtown is for the best after all.
