In an effort to reduce human error, the NHTSA might require new cars to implement technology that warns other drivers about coming accidents. Vehicle-to-vehicle technology "could provide warnings to drivers in as much as 76 percent of potential multi-vehicle collisions," according to a study by the Government Accountability Office.
The NHTSA is expected to make a decision in the "coming weeks." Among the factors the agency needs to consider are the cost of such systems and issues of privacy. People are already wary enough about who can access our data, and the V2V systems, which will rely on GPS, will certainly raise more concerns about Big Brother.
