Right now rear-view cameras are an amazing convenience that help you avoid hitting things like other cars or small children. But in 2018 the U.S. Transportation Department will make rear-view cameras mandatory in every new vehicle. The new rule is, of course, all about safety.

“Rear visibility requirements will save lives, and will save many families from the heartache suffered after these tragic incidents occur,” NHTSA Administrator David Friedman said in a statement. He also pointed out that backover crashes cause 15,000 injuries and 210 deaths per year. Children younger than five make up 31 percent of those fatalities.
