The Volkswagen Phaeton was a fantastic car that flopped really, really hard. It was a Bentley for people who didn't want to show off their wealth. Most people just thought it was a Passat, but inside was an oligarch resting on sumptuous leather and riding on a mountainous wave of torque from that incredible W12 engine.

We apprecaited that one could choose to have this level of performance and luxury without having to deal with everybody constantly staring and pointing, but the market didn't. The market wants to show off and doesn't seem that concerned with what the car can actually do, much of the time.

Now VW is planning to try again in 2019. We're hoping it's not toned down too much. We still want to see all of those parts that were swiped from Bentley as an Audi price in an unassuming body. The Phaeton is like Clark Kent; it might not look like much, but there's a superhero hiding on the inside.
