The F1 community is truly saddened today to learn of the passing of one of its greatest drivers. Three-time Australian Formula 1 champion Jack Brabham died early this morning, at his home on Australia’s Gold Coast, age 88.
Brabham’s F1 racing career spanned an impressive 16 years (1955-1970), over the course of which he won the world title in 1959 and 1960 driving a Cooper and then again in 1966 in his own Brabham BT19, making him the only F1 driver to win a championship driving a car of his own construction.
He notched an impressive 14 grand prix wins, 13 pole positions, and 31 total podium finishes. Brabham retired from F1 in 1970 at the age of 44, but still managed to take his final grand prix victory at the beginning of the ’70 season in South Africa.
