This morning Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson was accused of saying the n-word by The Daily Mirror. The British tabloid obtained unaired footage of Clarkson singing the "eeny, meeny, miny, moe..." song that notoriously contains the n-word in its most known version. At the part where the slur arrives, Clarkson mumbles. It's hard to tell what he's really saying—because that's how mumbling works—but where he said it carries automatically brings the association.

Clarkson apologized later today in a video (right here). This came after he initially denied the charge strongly in a tweet that says: "I did not use the n word. Never use it. The Mirror has gone too far this time." In the video apology Clarkson explains that he mumbled during the notorious part to avoid saying the n-word. When he heard the audio later, he asked for it to not air because of the possible mix-up. Instead, a version where he sings "catch a teacher by the toe" was aired.

This seems like a reasonable explanation. Clarkson would have been better off not singing the song at all because his very attempt to avoid saying the n-word made it sound like he did. He should know better than to walk the line considering he was previously caught saying an asian slur as "a joke."
