When GM and Chrysler were pulling their heads out of the 2009 financial toilet, Ford was steaming ahead with new products and a resolute vision, thanks to smart decisions made by Ford CEO Alan Mulally. But after eight years at the helm of Ford and 45 years in big business, Mulally is set on retirement and Mark Fields, Ford’s COO, will pick up the reigns.

It’s certainly a big seat to fill, but Fields should be up to the challenge. Before being named chief operating officer in 2012, Fields made a name for himself as the head of Mazda Motors and turned product into profits in the execution of the One Ford Plan. Seems like there’s no one better equipped for the job.

Alan Mulally will hand over CEO control on July 1, 2014. He’s produced a business that the great Henry Ford would be quite proud of.
