In racing, we tend to talk a lot about the top drivers in the world, but never does that conversation happen without the mention of Ayrton Senna, and with good reason. The Brazilian was looked upon as a mystic of racing – he could do things in a car that nobody else could match, seemingly bending the circuit around his will.

During qualifying for the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix, Ayrton Senna out-qualified his teammate Alain Prost by an astonishing 1.427 seconds. In a world of tenths and hundredths of a second, this was simply unbelievable.

On this day, 20 years since his tragic death at the Imola Circuit, McLaren takes a look at this spectacular showing of speed. These are Senna’s words.
