This looks like something straight out of the lab of a mad scientist, but it's actually the product of research by MIT. The Smart Morphing Surface, aka Smorph, could be used to make vehicles more aerodynamic by using the dimples on golf balls you're familiar with.
The problem with the dimples is that, while they help at low speeds, they actually make drag worse at higher speeds. That's why the skin morphs, releasing the vacuum that creates the dimples, to create a more aerodynamic surface.
MIT hasn't announced any plans to apply the technology to cars, but our imaginations are running wild. A whip wrapped in Smorph is sure to draw double takes, especially if it stays pink.
