SEC media days started earlier today. But to the surprise of many, Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall was not in attendance. And it left a lot of people out there scratching their heads as to why the Tigers didn't allow him to come and talk to reporters.
As it turns out, though, Auburn left Marshall off their media days roster because of a citation that he received on Friday for possession of a small amount of marijuana. Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn released a statement early Monday and revealed that Marshall was essentially on punishment because of his recent transgression.
"Up until last Friday, Nick has been a model student, a model teammate, and a model citizen," the statement said. "But he made a mistake, and he's going to have to suffer the consequences for that mistake. I'm not saying what the consequence is right now, but it will be addressed."
One of the consequences was obviously being forced to miss SEC media days. But another consequence could be Marshall sitting out for all or part of a game at the start of the Tigers' 2014 season. And with Auburn set to square off against Arkansas in their first game of the season, Marshall's recent issue could have some real consequences for not just him but for his team as well.
