The Porsche 911 never ceases to amaze us. The venerable 911 is the most successful racecar ever in motorsport history, notching more than 20,000 race victories. But not this one, nope. This is the Porsche 911 SC ‘Safari’ and it finished a lowly – gasp – second at the 1978 East African Safari Rally.

But that doesn’t matter, because it remains as one of the coolest and most iconic Porsches in the company’s expansive collection.

The 911 SC ‘Safari’ was purpose-built to rally in Africa, but only just. Porsche fitted upgraded suspension, knobby tires, a headlight rack, roll-cage, but aside from those upgrades – it was your standard 911. A large rock ultimately broke its rear suspension and spoiled this 911’s shot at the win.
