When it comes to taking your game to the next level, DJ Clue believes that all roads lead through New York. “Everyone knows that this is one of the main gateways for basketball,” he says. “For you to get your name, you have to actually come to play in Rucker or Dyckman…and prove yourself to the streets first.”

And many have done just that, from players whose names we may never know to some of the most famous to ever play the game. In fact, one of DJ Clue’s most unforgettable NYC basketball memories was marching in to Rucker Park alongside the legendary Kobe Bryant on the latter’s first trip to its courts. “When Kobe came in there,” he says, “it was like the gods opened up the gateway.”

At the end of the day, Clue thinks New York’s baller culture rises above that of other cities because of its authenticity. “New York basketball is more authentic…as far as bringing your flavor to the game.” In the video above, he takes us on a trip to some other authentic New York spots, including the go-hard-or-go-home courts at West 4th Street, his favorite retro jersey store, Mr. Throwback, and a bit of record shopping at Turntable Lab. Be sure to give it a watch to learn more on DJ Clue’s love of NYC’s unparalleled basketball scene.
