Earlier this year, we made a strong case for why Shaquille O'Neal, the rapper, deserves your respect. His rap skills have been used as a punchline for a long time now. But compared to a lot of his fellow athletes-turned-rappers—and hell, compared to some actual rappers—we think that Shaq had serious skills. And we're apparently not alone in that thinking.

Recently, TMZ Sports caught up with Russell Simmons and asked him if he's ever been impressed by an athlete who has tried rapping in the past. And somewhat surprisingly, he said Shaq and said that he wishes he would have signed Shaq to a record deal back in the 1990s when he first started rapping. Unfortunately, Simmons didn't get the chance to do it. But he claims that he definitely would have because he enjoyed listening to Shaq rap.
