Today couldn't end with at least one more insane college football storyline. On a day that five of the Top 10 teams in the country took an L, Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday set the single-game FBS and D1 passing yards record with an absurd 734 yards, ousting Houston's David Klingler, who threw for 716 yards in 1990, and Old Dominion's Taylor Heinicke, who threw for 730 in 2012. But guess what? The Cougars LOST. By one point, 59-60.
With 19 seconds left in the game, after Washington State had easily waltzed right back down the field to within two yards of a winning TD, Wazzo Head Coach Mike Leach decided to try to stay safe and kick a field goal on 3rd and Goal. Kicker Quentin Breshears, who had made a 42-yarder earlier, missed the 19-yard field goal and Halliday was left with a big fat loss to go with his record. Leach is usually a coaching genius, but there will no doubt be questions about taking an offense that had piled up 812 total yards without a single turnover off the field.
Halliday put those numbers up on 49/70 passing and 6 TDs. And to make it even crazier, Cal's QB Jared Goff put up 527 yards (the previous Pac-12 record set by (who else?) Halliday last year with 557) on 37/53 passing and tossed 5 TDs.
