The Sacramento Kings—off to a surprising 6-4 start and looking like a legitimate threat in the crowded Western Conference—locked up one of their cornerstones today, signing Rudy Gay to a three-year, $40 million contract extension. Gay is in the final year of his deal, and is currently on the books for $19.5 million this season.

This very team-friendly contract locks up the Kings’ core of Gay and DeMarcus Cousins through the 2017-18 season, and gives them enough cap room to go after a mid-to-high level free agent this summer.

Along with the emergence of Cousins as a legitimate star player, Gay’s performance this season has been a major reason for the Kings success. Through his first 10 games, he’s averaging 22.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per night and has looked revitalized after being dogged by complaints over his shooting efficiency and shot selection throughout his first seven years in the NBA.
