It appears that the initial fears were warranted; just-reinstated Georgia running back Todd Gurley tore his ACL last night on this play:

Gurley had just returned to the field after serving a four-game NCAA suspension for accepting $3000 for autographed memorabilia. Prior to his suspension, the junior was frontrunner for the Heisman trophy and all told had piled up 911 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in just six games.

The loss will certainly hurt 8-2 Georgia’s very slim prospects at sneaking into the four-team BCS playoff game, as the running back had been averaging 7.4 yards per carry on the season. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, freshman Nick Chubb has been outstanding in Gurley’s stead so far this year; he’s rushed for 1039 yards and nine touchdowns on the year, and should serve as a very capable fill-in.
