In Landon Donovan’s final game, the Los Angeles Galaxy were able to capture their fifth MLS Cup title as they defeated the New England Revolution 2-1 in extra time.
The score was locked at 0-0 after a somewhat disjointed, back-and-forth first half, but the Galaxy were able to go in front on this nifty settle and finish by Gyasi Zardes in the 51st minute:
The Revolution pressed forward looking for an equalizer, and finally go one on the unlikely boot of veteran left back Chris Tierney in the 79th minute:
The game went to extra time, and although the Revs saw the better of the chances in the first 15 minutes they were unable find the back of the net. MLS MVP Robbie Keane made them pay in the 111th minute, as he ran on to a brilliant pass from Marcelo Sarvas and gave his team a lead they would not relinquish:
While he didn’t figure on the scoresheet, Donovan was a factor as always in helping the Galaxy get forward. He now ends his career with six MLS Cup titles, the most of any player in history. For the Revs, it’s more MLS Cup heartbreak; the franchise is now 0-5 in their five championship appearances, losing every game by either one goal or in penalty kicks.
