Listening to an announcer call a sporting even can sometimes sound like an oral game of Mad Libs. Sports sayings like "hail mary," "alley-oop," and "hat trick" are common phrases within the vernacular for specific sports, but how the hell did they come to be? None of the words literally mean or describe the actions they represent, and yet, if you said, "Patrick Kane scored a hat trick last night in the NHL," nobody would have to guess how many goals he scored. Somehow, hat trick=three goals, and in hockey tradition, a ton of hats being thrown onto the ice in celebration.
