As of April 17, 2015, there are 23 states, as well as the District of Columbia, that have legalized marijuana for recreational and/or medical purposes. Still, NBA players caught violating the anti-drug policy (i.e. positive test for weed) are subject to a five-game suspension for their first offense and a mandatory entrance into league's substance abuse program. According to TMZ Sports, players not only want to see the rule changed, but they want the league to legalize the use of medicinal marijuana.

On the heels of Kevin Durant leaving an L.A. club last week and having what looked like medical marijuana fall out of his SUV, TMZ Sports approached 10 active NBA players who wanted to remain anonymous and asked them if the league should allow them to use weed, if they have a legitimate prescription from a doctor. They all said yes.

One player told us, "How can you tell a guy with a prescription not to use it?? They should be allowed to have their medicine."

Another said ... "The NBA shouldn't advertise for it, but I don't see an issue if a player uses [with a prescription]."

TMZ Sports is also reporting that after speaking with the NBA Players Association, this matter could be brought up at the next collective bargaining session in 2017.
