Hopefully, the Washington Wizards organization and their fans enjoyed their one year with Paul Pierce because it appears that his time with the team is coming to an end. While reports have indicated that Pierce may be hanging up his jersey for good, David Aldridge of NBA.com sees it a little differently.
"Washington's main issue is complacency," Aldridge writes. "The Wizards could stand pat if Pierce decides to return to D.C. next season rather than opt out of his deal, but many around the league believe Pierce will do just that and finish his career back home in Los Angeles with the Clippers."
Aside from joining his home state of California for the potential final year of his career, Pierce has an added incentive in reuniting with Doc Rivers, the man he called his head coach in his last nine seasons with the Boston Celtics. As the Clippers' president of basketball operations (for now), Rivers can work out a deal that will bring Pierce's scoring prowess, three-point shooting, toughness and leadership to a team in need of all those qualities.
It seems like a done deal, but a lot can happen between now and when Pierce officially makes his mind up.
