Yesterday Dez Bryant and the Cowboys came to an agreement that prevented a threatened holdout, a potential franchise tag, and allowed Dallas to lock-up the All-NFL wideout for five years/$70 million dollars (45 of which is guaranteed). After the contract was officially signed, Cowboys owner/president/GM/rich gooftball Jerry Jones lavished praise on Bryant's reps, both Roc Nation and owner Jay Z.

Said Jones of Bryant's management team:

“I must emphasize, Roc Nation, Jay-Z, the key people in Roc Nation did a marvelous job of convincing us that managing Dez and managing him with his off the field, with his marketing opportunities, with his finances, that they’re a group that will really make a contribution to Dez. They were very significant in us doing this deal with Dez.”

Of note in the contract is the lack of "safeguards" for any future off-the-field issues that may arise. According to Jones:

"As you know, the league has been addressing conduct policy significantly over the last 18 months. Consequently, we put into any new contracts the things that the league wants in the contract relative to conduct, and Dez has the same thing in his and no more than other veterans that we recently signed.”

Furthermore Jones offered praise for the team's commitment to their client:

“They sold me on their commitment to have an associate in Dez that makes them proud, that makes Dez proud to be associated with them, and that makes Roc Nation proud. I see that. I see they have a lot to gain and a lot to lose by giving good advice and by helping not only athletes but having entertainers reach their goals and, if you will, keep the money they earn. They’re good at it. They have the perfect textbook. It’s called their book. So they’re good at it. They’re genuine at it and I’m very, very impressed.”

In case you're wondering (which you probably are) Jay Z wasn't personally involved with the negotiations. So what was his role? He was involved with the confusingly worded “Painting of the picture of off the field decisions.” We're not 100 percent sure what that means, but Jones elaborated further :

"That’s where Jay-Z is such an example. The main thing is that people listen to him. Dez listens to him. Dez will listen to him. Why? We all should listen to him, he’s had tremendous success apart from being a great talent.”

It seems that that's how you avoid awkward training camp drama.

In a very short amount of time Roc Nation has made their mark on getting owners to pony up massive checks. Notable deals negotiated by the company include: Red Sox work-in-progress Rusney Castillo, whose $72.5 million dollar contract was a record-breaking deal for amateur free agents. Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano, who signed a decade long $240 million dollar deal that Seattle must be regretting the hell out of right now. And finally Dolphins defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, whose $114 million dollar deal made him the highest paid defender in NFL history.

Also of note is the fact that they represent Kevin Durant, because (as you know) the 2014 real MVP will hit free agency after this upcoming season. Expect lots of zeroes there.
