Update:

There appears to be conflicting information over whether or not Volquez knows the upsetting news. From Washington Post baseball writer Barry Svrluga:

The Royals are saying that Edinson Volquez does not know about his father's reported death.

Just to be clear: The Royals are saying Volquez doesn't know about his father's reported death. @Enrique_Rojas1 is reporting otherwise.

See original story below.

Hours before he was slated to take the mound in the 2015 World Series opener, Royals starting pitcher Edinson Volquez's father Daniel passed away due to heart disease:

Our @Enrique_Rojas1 reporting that Edinson Volquez learned about his father's death on the way to the ballpark today.

Volquez reportedly found out the news as he was driving to the stadium:

Before the game it was unclear whether or not Volquez would pitch, but he obviously answered that question in the top of the first inning. At the time that this sentence was written Volquez had retired the first six Mets he'd faced.
