Prior to last night’s Minnesota/Illinois game, Minnesota announced that they were suspending three players for the entirety of the game due to a violation of team rules. Head coach Richard Pitino didn’t say what the players did to deserve their suspensions, but he revealed that Nate Mason, Kevin Dorsey, and Dupree McBrayer were all being suspended for not living up to the “expectations and standards to which we hold our student-athletes accountable.”

Under normal circumstances, that wouldn’t be much of a story. College athletes, er, student-athletes get suspended all the time for skipping classes, getting bad grades, and, well, being college kids. But in this particular instance, it sounds like Minnesota might have a big problem on its hands.

According to Deadspin, the three players were suspended after Dorsey (pictured above) posted two videos to his Twitter account on Friday night that showed him and another man having sex with a woman. The videos were quickly deleted, and Dorsey eventually deleted his entire Twitter account. But the videos turned into a hot topic on the GopherHole.com message board with several people who had seen the videos describing what was going on in them. Here's one graphic description of what was reportedly on the videos:

I saw both of the videos. I apologize for being graphic but here it what I saw. In the two videos, two guys were double teaming a girl from the front and behind. In the second video, there was a different girl and Dorsey was taking the front while the other guy was doing her from behind. You could clearly see his face although he is the only one that I could see. Both videos were extremely graphic.

Judging by that description, it sounds like Dorsey's face was the only face that was visible on the videos, so it's unclear what role, if any, Mason and McBrayer played in them. There's a chance they were suspended for something else. But when Pitino spoke with reporters after Minnesota's loss to Illinois, he refused to elaborate on why he decided to bench his three players:

“Obviously, culture and doing what’s right is extremely important to myself, our staff and our players. I wake up every day, and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity that I have to coach in an awesome basketball conference and to coach in a place where I consider my dream job. We’re going to do things the right way. Tonight wasn’t about wins and losses, it was about making sure our guys understand that this thing is bigger than just basketball. And we’re going to do what we believe is right. Unfortunately you may lose the battle, but you’re going to win the war. Today was unfortunately not as much about wins and losses but about the culture of our program. That’s something we work at every single day. And it’s extremely important to what we’re all about.”

Stay tuned for more details. This story is pretty much guaranteed to bring the Golden Gophers’ season to a screeching halt.
