Five-time NFL MVP/14-time Pro Bowler Peyton Manning will reportedly hold a press conference tomorrow to announce his retirement, which shouldn't be all that surprising to anybody who watched him this past season, or read occasional accounts of what 18 years in the NFL has done to his body. The news was first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen:
The No. 1 overall pick in 1998, Manning is the all-time league leader in passing yards (71,940), touchdowns (539), and some other things. Just a few seasons ago, back in 2013, he set single-season marks in the same categories by tossing for 5,477 yards and 55 TDs. This past season age finally caught up to the 39-year-old, as a tear near his left heel caused him to miss seven starts and run the Broncos' scout team offense before eventually replacing Brock Osweiler to manage the game, as Denver's 'D' led him to his second career Super Bowl victory.
No word yet on what Manning will pursue now that his playing days are reportedly done. Coaching? Team ownership? Who knows? Though don't be surprised when there are internet rumors (in the same vein as Michael Jordan in 1993) that this is actually a suspension disguised as a retirement.
