In the past, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has made it very clear that his father Floyd Mayweather Sr.doesn’t speak for him when he talks to the press. So you probably shouldn’t put too much stock into this. But during an interview with the Los Angeles Times today, Mayweather Sr. was asked if he thinks Mayweather would agree to a rematch with Manny Pacquiao later this year, if (and this might be a big if) Pacquiao beats Timothy Bradley decisively this Saturday night. And Mayweather Sr. gave an interesting answer.
“I’m not going to say Floyd won’t fight again,” he said, before hinting that Mayweather Jr. might like the idea of fighting in the new 20,000-seat T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “[The new arena], that might [convince him], too. He might be persuaded.”
Mayweather Sr. went on to say that he “wouldn’t do it” if the decision was left up to him. He said that he thinks his son is already the “best fighter ever,” and of course, he mentioned that Mayweather Jr. has more than enough money (duh). But for the right price, he thinks Mayweather might be able to be convinced.
“The money has to be deep,” he said. “I mean deep, deep, deep. More than that [last fight].”
So you’re saying there’s a chance? Like we said, don’t get too excited about any of this (if the idea of another Mayweather fight even excites you at all at this point, given what happened during his last fight). But the fact that Mayweather Sr. has planted this seed has to mean something. Right? Hmmm...
