Sunday afternoon the U.S. Men's Basketball team spanked Serbia, which was not unexpected. And afterward Carmelo Anthony gave an emotional interview wherein he admitted that today was the last game he'd play for Team USA, retiring as the team's all-time top scorer and also as the only man to win three Olympic basketball gold medals.

However during the postgame Q&A he also ventured outside of basketball to give his thoughts on the current fractured state of the country:

Best part of Carmelo Anthony's Postgame interview. More than just basketball. Thank you for this message pic.twitter.com/1VUNe1UfQ7

While he'll undoubtedly get dumped on again once the Knicks get off to like, I don't know, an 8-11 start this season, his Sunday afternoon words struck a sympathetic cord on Twitter:

USA Basketball coaches have always thought much more highly of Melo than rest of NBA community. He just gave another reason why

"...but we have to be united." 🇺🇸

Thank you, Melo...so, so strong.

It's pretty dope to see Melo have so much fun in the Olympics. May never win a ring, but can't really argue that he isnt/hasn't been great.

Moving to see and hear Carmelo Anthony so moved by winning his 3rd and last gold medal for our country. He was the leader. Bless you, man.

If you weren't a Melo fan before that interview, you are now.

It would appear that he actually meant it when he said this. Congrats on gold No. 3.
