After Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning against the Cardinals on Sunday night, the Cubs DJ pumped The Prodigy's 1997 hit, "Smack My Bitch Up," through the Wrigley Field PA system in an effort to get the home crowd pumped. If you don't remember the song, it goes like this:

And while it probably wouldn't have received much of a response if it was played for a different closer, the song was an unfortunate choice for Chapman when you consider that he made headlines back in December after he was accused of choking his girlfriend and firing eight gunshots in the garage of his Miami area home during a domestic dispute. Chapman wasn't convicted of a crime following the incident, but he was suspended for 30 games at the start of the 2016 MLB season. So the Cubs' decision to play the song for Chapman was a curious one.

The Cubs initially said the song choice was "unintentional," but they took that a step further on Monday afternoon when they publicly apologized for playing the song for Chapman and announced that they had fired the employee who was responsible for sending "Smack My Bitch Up" out into the stadium. ESPN reporter Jesse Rogers reported it first:

It's unclear if the employee knew what he or she was doing by playing the song, but it was obviously a really poor decision on the employee's part.
