This Ryan Lochte saga continues with more white lies. And if you can believe as such, it's not just from Lochte. Now it appears Rio police also exaggerated some details about what went down at that gas station last week.
Since there was a lack of evidence, besides that video the whole world saw after Lochte's robbery-at-gunpount claim he would later admit was a farce, the police reportedly exaggerated their take on the supposed damage in the gas station's bathroom. Rio police spokesman Fernando Veloso claimed in a press conference that there was severe damage to the bathroom to determine it was a crime scene. He also said Lochte's teammates Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy—as well as Lochte himself—smashed a soap dispenser and mirror and destroyed a bathroom door during their drunken stupor.
But supposedly, there was nothing broken at all. And according to a USA Todayreport from Monday, none of that stuff was replaced either. So where did all that come from? On top of that, the surveillance footage above the entrance of the station revealed that Lochte never even entered that bathroom.
The police also claimed Lochte ripped down a "loosely attached" advertisement from an exterior wall. According to a police statement from Bentz and Fernando Deluz, a disc jockey who translated the argument between the Team USA swim teammates and security guards from Portuguese to English, said this of when off-duty security guards had drawn their gun:
“If I hadn’t involved myself, I thought — the police chief told me, ‘Man, if you hadn’t gone there in that moment, a tragedy could have occurred.”
Deluz had also translated that the security guards had demanded payment from Lochte and his teammates for the damage caused.
