The USA men’s and women’s teams both have strong starting centers in this year’s Olympics. DeMarcus Cousins is a two-time NBA All-Star with the Sacramento Kings; Brittney Griner is a two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year winner. They’re among the best post players in their respective leagues.

Griner has recently made it clear she believes she could beat Cousins in one-on-one. Back in 2013, Mark Cuban suggested he might draft Griner.

But could she actually beat the USA men’s team’s center? ESPN asked Team USA for their opinions, and the consensus was in Cousins’ favor.

“I’m glad she’s that confident in her abilities, but she’s also a little delusional,” Cousins said. “It’s not a walk in the park over here.”

Kevin Durant and Draymond Green agreed: not going to happen.

Griner, of course, is sticking to her opinion. She laughed when she heard how Cousins and the men’s team responded. “It’s OK, little man,” she said, adding that it just adds fuel to her motivation.

Cousins is averaging 9.7 points and 4.7 rebounds in the Olympics, while Griner is putting up 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds.

Griner does have support from one person: teammate Diana Taurasi. “My money’s on B.G.,” Taurasi said.

Perhaps the most extreme assessment came from USA women’s head coach Geno Auriemma: “If there’s no referee, I’m going to go to the ATM, and I’m going to sell my house, and I’m going to put all my money on DeMarcus Cousins.”

No matter how it would shake out, Carmelo Anthony and DeAndre Jordan had it right: we’d buy tickets for this. NBA All-Star Weekend, anyone? Make it happen.
