Josh Brown has likely played his final game for the New York Giants, and it could also serve as his final game in the NFL.
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Giants are going to remove Brown from their active roster at 4 p.m. ET on Friday and place him on the commissioner’s exempt list. While on the list, Brown would be able to collect his base salary, which is worth about $1.15 million, but he would not be allowed to play in the NFL. He will be permitted to appeal the Giants’ decision if you chooses to do it, but multiple sources told Mortensen that there’s a good chance Brown’s NFL career is going to be over once the Giants make the roster move.
The Giants’ decision comes less than 48 hours after police documents were released that show that Brown admitted to abusing his wife in a series of letters, emails, and journal entries that were submitted to authorities after he was arrested on domestic violence charges in May 2015. Brown originally served a one-game suspension stemming from that arrest, but the new documents have called the league’s decision to suspend Brown for just one game—and the Giants’ decision to re-sign Brown to a two-year, $4 million contract during the offseason—into question.
The Giants are currently preparing to play the Rams in London on Sunday. Brown was told to stay home from the game, and the Giants have signed former Bears kicker Robbie Gould to a one-year deal to replace him.
