Florida International tight end Jonnu Smith is obviously not the first college football player to be ruled out for the rest of the season with an injury. Plenty of players have gone down with knee, ankle, and other injuries in recent weeks. But he is the first player to go down with an injury that came about as a result of a scary encounter with a pot filled with boiling hot water. According to reports, the FIU player sustained a series of really bad burns after his girlfriend Mary Gaspar dumped boiling water on him after claiming that he wasn't paying enough attention to her.

Gaspar—who is reportedly five months pregnant with the couple's child—admitted to police that she dumped the scalding hot water on Smith after an argument about how much attention he was giving to her. She told police she boiled the water after she sat in her dorm room "feeling extremely emotional and stressed." Gaspar also reportedly hit Smith with her open hands after dumping the water on him.

During the alleged attack, Smith sustained severe burns to his head, neck, shoulders, back, and one of his arms, which effectively ended both his season and his NCAA history in one of the most bizarre ways in recent memory. Through 10 games for the Golden Panthers this season, Smith had put up respectable numbers, tallying 39 receptions for 441 yards and three touchdowns. He was also one of the best tight ends in the country back in 2014 as he recorded a nation-leading 61 receptions, 710 yards, and eight touchdowns. The senior is projected to be a late-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Smith has not commented on the incident yet, but what a terrible way to end your college football career.
