Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor have been circling each other in a publicity crazed chicken match for some time now about the possibility of a mega fight between the two champions. Dana White recently tried to get this whole show on the road recently by offering both men $25 million to finally agree to the fight. The UFC chief is also contending that the gap in popularity between the two fighters is not as vast as Floyd thinks it is.
Of course, Floyd laughed off the offer as a mere $25 million is chump change to the Money Team President. Despite him laughing at that number, he is apparently dead serious about facing McGregor at some point. He told Jim Gray as much during a TMT Promotions boxing event on Showtime yesterday that he’s willing to take the fight if the price is right.
“The best thing to do is look at how much money Conor McGregor has made, then look up how much money Floyd Mayweather has made, and then we can make the fight happen,” he said.
The money issue is only one of the many reasons that we won’t see the fight for quite some time. Mr. TMT pocketed between $220-230 million for his fight against Manny Pacquiao, and he said that he wanted $100 million for this fight on First Take. McGregor has never even made anything close to that off a fight. In fact, his recent fight with Nate Diaz was the first reported fight in UFC history where both competitors took home more than a million dollars.
Going from 3 million to 25 million is a leap that would be a massive upgrade, while Mayweather would be a taking a considerable downgrade at taking anything approaching that. It all comes down to the words from the man’s own mouth. He said he viewed himself as a businessman so any agreement is going to have to make business sense for the welterweight champion. Speculation is all fun and will 'absolutely' keep us all watching for it, but until some way to reconcile that gap appears, there will be no fight.
