In doofus news from across the pond, a backup goalie on British soccer team Sutton United has resigned from the organization after a promotional stunt went very, very poorly for him. If, for whatever reason, you need more details than that, here's how the story goes.

Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw was playing for on the roster for his squad when they went up against Arsenal in a landmark non-league game on Monday. At the same time an English newspaper's betting company, which happened to be the sponsor of Sutton U for this particular game, posted 8-to-1 odds that the overweight Shaw would eat a meat pie during the match.

After it became clear that the backup wasn't going to play for Sutton, likely in an effort to play along with the prop bet, Shaw then stuffed a pie in his mouth from the bench.

"I thought I would give them (the betting company) a bit of banter and let's do it," Shaw told local media afterward.

SMH, what did he think? Sports are supposed to be entertaining?

His manager, Paul Doswell, also added his two cents. "Wayne has become this global superstar on the back of being 23 stone (322 pounds)," Doswell said. "He's made that a chance to make some more media coverage off the back of it. I don't think it shows us in the best light."

Unfortunately, the move not only prompted Shaw to resign, but his stunt also came to the attention of a governing body which regulates commercial gambling. According to Sports Illustrated, English FA rules ban players from gambling on any "occurrence" during a game. They also added there's no evidence Shaw actually profited from eating the pie.

Richard Watson, who is in charge of enforcing the rules of the aforementioned body that regulates gambling, said they'd be investigating because "integrity in sport is not a joke."

If you care, Sutton ended up losing the contest 2-0.

Also, Shaw has been offered a years-worth of pies from a local supermarket looking to promote themselves off the controversy, according to The Independent.
