According to multiple media outlets, the New York Knicks are looking to revamp their front office by hiring Raptors president, Masai Ujiri. The news made the rounds online this morning and has since been supported by Marc Berman of the New York Post and recent ESPN hiring and dropper of bombs, Adrian Wojnarowski. It’s a rumour that coincides with the promotion of Raptors executive, Bobby Webster, who was officially named general manager earlier today following the departure of Jeff Weltman to the Orlando Magic.
Amidst all of this movement, a team press release out of Toronto mentioned that Ujiri will continue to oversee basketball operations for Canada’s only NBA franchise. Despite this information, whispers out of New York insist that the former scout and NBA director of Basketball Without Borders is being eyed heavily to take over as Knicks president. The move would reunite Masai with Knicks star Carmelo Anthony, who was dealt during Ujiri’s tenure as general manager of the Denver Nuggets.
Ujiri took over Toronto’s front office in 2013, and has since built a team that has competed admirably in the league’s Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, Knicks counterpart Phil Jackson has failed to turnaround the fortunes in basketball’s premier market. Jackson was fired from his position on Wednesday after a string of miserable signing, trades, and public disputes with star players. There has yet to be any word out of either camp regarding the potential of an Ujiri signing. The good news for Toronto fans, however, appears to be that the rumour is a bit of a pipeline dream.
