Venus Williams' attempt to set a record has come to an end. In her pursuit of becoming the oldest woman in the Open era to win a Grand Slam title, Williams, 37, was defeated by Garbine Muguruza in the Wimbledon final, 7-5, 6-0.

For the second time in three years, Muguruza was tasked with having to topple a Williams sister in the Wimbledon final. After falling to Serena in 2015, the Spaniard didn't allow this opportunity slip through her fingers, even when she was on the brink of defeat.

In the first set, Williams was ahead, 5-4, and had two chances to put Muguruza away. Two mistakes by Venus at set point left the door open for Muguruza, and she took full advantage. Missed opportunities and unforced errors—Williams finished with 25 while Muguruza had 11—led to the come from behind victory.

Following the match, Muguruza reflected on the moment where she defeated someone she grew up watching. "When I was a little girl, I was watching these finals," Muguruza said, perESPN. "I was watching Venus—I know it sounds incredible. To be able to play against her and now hold the big trophy, it means a lot."

Meanwhile, Williams has no reason to hang her head. She played incredibly well, and also surpassed Maria Sharapova for second on the all-time career money list with $37.9 million. Venus has had an amazing career, and this loss will not change that.
