Oscar de la Renta has extended an invitation to John Galliano to spend three weeks at his design studio in NYC. De la Renta explained that the residency, as it's being called, is an opportunity for Galliano to "reimmerse himself in the world of fashion and reacclimate in an environment where he has been so creative.” Since making anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris café, Galliano was nearly eradicated from the industry as he battled alcoholism and other substances.
But de la Renta believes that the time is right and Galliano is too talented of a designer to be kept out of the fashion world. “I think John is doing all the right things. Everyone in life deserves a second chance, especially someone as talented as John. I think that life is about forgiving and helping people…I think John is doing all the right things.” The Anti-Defamation League, which heavily criticized Galliano's remarks, which included "I love Hitler," released a statement saying they welcomed the move and wished Galliano much success.
It's widely believed that Anna Wintour, a fan of Galliano and personal friend of de la Renta, was behind this development. Rumors have surfaced since last summer of Wintour lobbying on behalf of Galliano, and WWD surmised that this residency is a way to ease Galliano back into the industry and society. Asked if Galliano would be participating in the design process leading up to New York Fashion Week, de la Renta said that he'd welcome contributions. “While I’m working on a collection, I sit with all of my assistants around me,” he said. “I’m not a loner. I listen to everyone." Even (formerly?) disgraced designers.
