Ever wonder why women spend rent money on a purse? According to a study out of the University of Minnesota, the fairer sex makes such big purchases to keep their men from cheating. Sounds a little crazy, right? Maybe.

But the University of Minnesota researchers surveyed 649 women of different ages and relationship statuses, and in the end found that Chanel, Fendi, and Gucci are all part of their tactic. A majority of the women said that they use the expensive bags to show they're in a committed relationship, fending off other women.

"It might seem irrational that each year Americans spend over $250 billion on women's luxury products with an average woman acquiring three new handbags a year, but conspicuous consumption is actually smart for women who want to protect their relationship," said researcher Vladas Griskevicius. "When a woman is flaunting designer products, it says to other women 'back off my man.'"

Damn. Women are even smarter than we think.
