It’s a time-honored and sometimes quirky tradition to make one’s own holiday cards. No type of person is better suited to that practice than artists. With that in mind, a new retrospective of handmade holiday cards from the Smithsonian Archives of American Art is now on display at the Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery at the Smithsonian’s Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture.

The 60 hand-drawn holiday cards by artists feature paintings, collages, drawings, quips, and messages of cheer from the good-spirited inventives Artists in the collection include  b, Milton Avery, Alexander Calder,Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Indiana, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and Robert Motherwell, Joseph Cornell, Dan Flavin, Robert Indiana, Leo Castelli, and Ad Reinhardt. 60 handmade cards and correspondences go on view November 27; the exhibition runs until January 5 2014.
