We thought everyone loved Spongebob Squarepants, but apparently we were wrong. Today a chalk outline of what appears to be the popular cartoon character's body was found on the sidewalk in front of the Bowery Mural Wall, surrounded by construction barrels and caution tape. The wall is currently the site of an amazing Hurricane Sandy-themed mural by Swoon, but this terrible scene has drawn an entirely new crowd of spectators to the busy corner. The pavement is stained with blood near what would have been Spongebob's head, so we suspect that he was shot at close range.

The identity of the victim has yet to be confirmed by coroners and Gary could not be reached for questioning. We will keep you updated as news breaks.
