When was the last time you heard the phrase “professional origami artist?” Well, if you watch the fund-raising video by Sipho Mabona above, it’s among the first things you’ll hear. Because he’s a professional origami artist. And he wants to fold a life-sized elephant from a single sheet of paper.

The project is called “White Elephant.” Let’s ignore the fact the phrase “white elephant” refers to a farcical gift in a holiday exchange. Regardless, here’s the brief: “As an ultimate prove [sic] that there are no limits to what can be made out of a square piece of paper I came up with the idea to fold a life-size origami elephant.”

Mabona has exhibited his large-scale works in galleries and museums across the globe. Here’s another video:

On Indie Go-Go, he’s trying to raise $21,000 for the “White Elephant” project. A piece of paper large enough to fold a life-sized elephant might be expensive. But the artist also needs to hire a few assistants, build a supportive inner from for the huge sculpture, and install some webcams so people can view the folding of the sculpture. It will be displayed at the Art Museum in Beromunster, Switzerland.
