Never afraid of unconventional shapes and design techniques, Frank Gehry created a new structure in Paris looks like a robotic insect or an alien hive. The incredible building, home to the Louis Vuitton Foundation for Creation, is set to open this spring.
Gehry's design pulls from the forms of billowing sails and the structure of the Grand Palais. "I dream of designing, in Paris, a magnificent vessel symbolizing the cultural calling of France," he said.
The $127 million museum was scheduled to open in 2012 in the Bois de Boulogne district in the west of Paris, but various legal obstacles halted construction. Now the much-anticipated Foundation will open its doors in a few months.
The museum will be a space for both established and emerging artists from around the world. Led by the French curator Suzanne Pagé, the Foundation is a nonprofit made possible by the group LVMH.
