On the wake of Nelson Mandela's death, the New York Public Library has found a way to honor the late South African revolutionary. The library has set up exhibitions of apartheid memorabilia, which will be on display until Dec. 21 at the Schomburg Center for Research and Black Culture in Harlem and at the library's 5th Avenue building.

The items on view span from the 1970s to 1990s and include the ballots from South Africa's first democratic elections, which took place in 1994, the year Mandela was elected president.

Anthony Marx, the New York Public Library's president says why the exhibitions are fitting to honor Mandela's life: "He understood that free opportunity rests upon access to information and learning, for which he and so many South Africans fought so hard."
