Well, it’s the news everyone has been waiting for, if by “everyone” we mean “a very select number of people who are invested in this sort of thing.” Pantone has revealed its 2014 color of the year. The color to take home the annual honors is a virulent shade of purple/pink, dubbed #18-3224 Radiant Orchid. Radiant Orchid replaces Emerald Green as the coming calendar cycle’s poster child.
“We know that purple is known because it’s magical,” says American color specialist and executive director of PANTONE Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, in a video interview. She goes on: “That is so important in today’s life. We’re all looking for that touch of uniqueness.” Watch the rest of the interview over here.
“While the 2013 color of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” Eiseman said in a statement.
Last week, designers around the world were taking bets on what color Pantone would adopt as its 2014 official; only one Brazilian designer came close to guessing the hue, though he rationalized it in much the same way Eiseman is here. “I have observed similar and complementary shades in several fields: fashion, interior design, and digital,” Roger Macedo said.
