The Museum of Modern Art, in partnership with MoMA PS1 and Volkswagen, will present a free public arts festival titled "Rockaway!" at Fort Tilden and Rockaway Beach beginning on June 29 and lasting through the first day of September.

The festival was conceived by MoMA PS1’s director Klaus Biesenbach and artist Patti Smith as a way to "celebrate the re-opening of Fort Tilden and recognize the ongoing recovery of the Rockaway peninsula."Adrián Villar Rojas and Janet Cardiff will each present solo projects during the festival, and Patti Smith will present a large-scale installation, a site-specific outdoor installation, a photography exhibition, and she will join actor and artist James Franco in reading poetry by Walt Whitman as a part of the opening day's schedule. A large group exhibition will round out the events of the festival, organized in collaboration with the Honolulu Biennial, and set to take place at the newly reopened Rockaway Beach Surf Club.
