On Wednesday, the world rejoiced as the European Space Agency landed a spacecraft on a comet. Unfortunately for one of the scientists behind the project, he's being recognized more for a racy shirt he wore than his part in the recent achievement.

In the hours leading up to the successful landing, those involved in the mission were interviewed by Nature Newsteam. For some reason, Rosetta scientist Dr. Matt Taylor decided to show up in a shirt that featured caricatures of provocatively posed women in bondage—not exactly the most appropriate attire to wear to work, let alone on television.

Countless people have blasted Taylor for wearing the controversial top. "I don't care what scientists wear, but a shirt featuring women in lingerie isn't appropriate for a broadcast if you care about women in science," Katie Mack, an astrophysicist, told The Telegraph.

His lapse in sartorial judgment also set off a "#shirtstorm" hashtag on Twitter. This is just one of the trending tweets:

Yesterday, during a press briefing, Taylor broke down and apologized when directed with a question. “The shirt I wore this week," he began. "I made a big mistake and I’ve offended many people and I’m very sorry about this." Watch the tearful (and super awkward) apology below.
